Taking Cabinets Beyond the Kitchen: 6 Rooms That Need Great Cabinets, Too

Posted October 7, 2019 by Katlyn Droke

Have you seen all the different ways cabinets can be used throughout the home? Kitchen cabinets usually get all the attention, and other wonderful spaces in the home can get overlooked. Some places might be obvious (read: the bathroom), and others can be delightfully unexpected. But it’s just as easy to save more on high quality cabinets for other rooms, too.

Take a tour through all of these ‘non-kitchen’ rooms and consider if any of yours could benefit from a little cabinet love:

Bathrooms really are like mini-kitchens, with cabinets, countertops, sinks, and faucets — all on a smaller scale. They’re usually the first ‘non-kitchen’ use for cabinets that most people come across when cabinet shopping, which is why it deserves the first mention. As one of the most used rooms in the house, they’re an easy place to justify a remodel or upgrade. All the daily wear and tear that bathroom cabinets face make it necessary to get high-quality, durable cabinets.

Our Recommendation: To enjoy this spa-like space, choose a durable cabinet in a relaxing color that is easy to keep clean. Like these Platinum Grey or Nantucket Shaker cabinets.

Laundry Rooms

Is your laundry room more of a clutter closet? Washing and drying anything in this room requires quite a few components, like detergent, softener, bleach, stain remover, dryer sheets, laundry bags, and more. All of these necessary cleaning items tend to stack up and clutter the space, making a not-so-fun chore even less enjoyable. Typically the solution to the amount of stuff in there is basic open wire shelving.

Our Recommendation: Choose clean, light-colored cabinets to make the small room feel bigger and use organizers to declutter all the stuff we have to have in there.

When homeowners think of offices, they imagine bookshelves and a desk (naturally), but those bookshelves can only go so far when it comes to storage. Cabinets on the other hand, could add floor-to-ceiling storage while not detracting from the overall look of the room. In this case, cabinets most likely need to blend in rather than stand out so that they aren’t distractions.

Our Recommendation: Choose a cabinet color and style that compliments your desk, which should be the showpiece of the room.

Create an ‘elegant soiree’ feel to your room by adding cabinets space that doesn’t make the room feel like a bar.

Dry Bars

Level up your in-home drybar from ‘college frat house’ to ‘elegant soiree’ with a set of wall and base cabinets. Rather than buying a pre-made or fabricated bar, choose a set of cabinets to create a fixture that feels mature and like it belongs in the room. Plus, for those who entertain infrequently, cabinets can create a space that doesn’t scream “BAR”. That way, when you aren’t entertaining, your bar doesn’t always have to feel like a bar.

Our Recommendation: Set up the perfect libation station by focusing on cabinet designs or configurations that work best around a sink, coolers, wine racks, and glassware.

Garages suffer the same “too much stuff” problem that a lot of other rooms have, and cabinets are a great solution for making the most out of the mess. The right cabinets can offer durability and maximum storability. The standard trendy kitchen cabinets may not feel right, but other styles add a touch of class to a rough-and-tough place. And you never know, a spice rack could find a new life organizing tools.

Our Recommendation: Choose a flat, modern cabinet in an Earthy color to weather the years in a space that can be exposed to the elements. A dark shade helps hide the oil and dirt that naturally comes with the space.

Craft Rooms

For many customers, their craft rooms must offer a large working space and have a high degree of organization. Scrapbooking, quilting, leatherwork, jewelry making — no matter what your craft of choice is, it usually involves a need to spread out. The right cabinets and countertop can give you all the space you need to let your creative side run wild and bring your visions to life.

Our Recommendation: Add a kitchen-like island to the center of your room to create as large a workspace as possible.
